Italian mixed media artist Fabio La Fauci was born surrounded by beauty, and especially, the beauty of people around him. Though he has since departed his native homeland, he still draws inspiration from those early memories.
La Fauci’s style is instantly recognizable: thick swashes of colorful acrylic paste over desaturated oil painted bodies provides depth & texture for his portraits, which curiously, do not feature faces.
Traditionally, portraitures have quite sensibly focused on the details of a human face: a furrowed brow, aging wrinkles, or an asymmetric smile to capture the mood, expression, and personality of the subject.
Rather, La Fauci’s subjects are often defined by their posture; many of La Fauci’s subjects feature elongated necks that capture the yearning of something or perhaps, someone that is just quite out of grasp. In some of his works, there is a feeling of hesitance, innocence, and uncertainty. In others, bold confidence is on display, his subjects ostensibly staring directly into the viewer’s soul.
Through his unique techniques combining surreal, minimalist, and abstract styles, La Fauci is able to capture la essenza, the essence, of his subjects like few others. His face-less portraits intentionally leave the interpretation of his art up to the viewer, daring them to imagine what the face might look like. The eyes, nose, and mouth are not so necessary after all.
